Mark & Patricia Fuchs had made many moves in their lives, but nothing about their move to South Carolina had gone right. Their new home wasn’t ready, and the moving van had already left with all their belongings. They had scrambled to find a garage to store them, and now they found themselves standing before one with a broken door and no lockin pouring rain. A lesser pair might have been at each other’s throats under such circumstances, but not Mark & Patricia. They simply looked at each other and burst out laughing. It was at that point that they realized that this was just another one of life’s challenges to be overcomeand this husband and wife team knew they’d never failed to meet a challenge.
The Power of Teamwork
Mark & Patricia practically define the word teamworkthat’s why they’re able to look back on that move with nothing but good humor. In fact, effective teamwork is at the core of their philosophy, both personally and professionally. “Patricia and I both have strengths and weaknesses,” says Mark, “but put us together, and you have a formidable pair.” Indeed, there’s a synergy between these two that is palpable from the moment you meet them, and it’s not just reflected in their casual banter. Says Patricia, “It’s knowing how to bring out the best in each other so that together we can accomplish much more.” It’s not surprising to learn that these two have each spent most of their lives either participating in or leading successful teams.
A Lifelong Pursuit
Patricia first learned the value of teamwork through her studies in A Capella voice and drama. “A Capella requires focus and discipline,” she says, “it demands that you be completely aware of every element that contributes to that music. When you sing in a choir or chorus, you’re one part of a greater wholeand you can never forget that.” For Mark the lesson came through baseball and service in the U.S. Navy. “In baseball I learned that teamwork really produces results,” he says, “but in the military I learned that cooperative effort is crucial to survival.” The two met when both were working for AT&T & Lucent Technologies. Patricia was part of the group responsible for determining the logistics of AT&T’s historic divestiture, including the division of millions of dollars of assets. Mark managed a 150 member international team responsible for defining organizational needs, the most effective processes to meet them and implementing those processes for successful results.
